Purpose

This circular trivet was probably used for the placement of hot pots and pans; it was often called a "dish rest." Many early trivets were used for the placement of hot sad irons while ironing. Later trivets were electrical and were utilized as hot plates to keep the contents of pots warm.

Date Details

Many of the elaborate cast iron trivets found in Kitchen Collectibles (Plante 97) and 300 Years of Kitchen Collectibles (Franklin 347) are dated sometime in the last half of the nineteenth century as well as the early 1900's. Some of the trivets made specifically for sad irons (triangular in shape) were not as lavishly decorated and were manufactured earlier as some of them are dated within the first half of the 1800's. Unfortunately, none of those mentioned however, have the dual trivet plates as does the one above. Nonetheless, due to the ornate nature and shape of this trivet, it was most likely introduced and utilized during the mid to late 19th century.
